Each summer, Hiratsuka transforms itself into a colorful festival town drawing approximately 1.5-3 million people over the 4 days of the Tanabata festival, the star festival. Tanabata is based on an old romantic Chinese legend about two stars, Altair and Vega. This legend was brought to Japan as the star festival and the celebration began to be practiced in Japanese emperor's court, which came to be in poetry, or prayer for the realization of love.

The Tokyo Millenario, an arcade of light sculptures designed by Italian art director Valerio Festi, is lit up at Marunouchi near Tokyo Station. From December 24th to January 1st, magnificent ornaments and wall tapestries displayed outside of Tokyo station, the statue of lights called Paratura, and the 400m-long street lights in the Marunouchi office district takes you to the absolute dream world.
